Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Muse.
Getting Started
What is Muse?
Muse is a social music app that connects people through their taste in music — both in the app and at live music events. Instead of just photos and bios, Muse uses your music taste to help you discover people who share your vibe. Find new music through people, find new people through music.
Who can use Muse?
Anyone 18 or older can use Muse — you don't need to be a college student. You get in by redeeming an invite code, verifying a school (.edu) email, or scanning the Muse QR code at a live event. Multiple checks keep the community real — no bots, no fake profiles.
How do I sign up?
Download Muse from the App Store and sign in with Apple. To get in, redeem an invite code, verify a school (.edu) email, or scan the Muse QR code at a live event. The onboarding walks you through everything.
Do I have to be a college student?
No. You don't need to be a student or have your college listed. You can join with an invite code from a friend or by scanning the Muse QR code at a live event — verifying a school (.edu) email is just one of several ways in.
Is Muse available on Android?
Not yet. Muse is currently iOS only. Android support is on our roadmap.
Is Muse free?
Yes, Muse is 100% free. You can use every feature without paying anything. Optional extras like peeks, boosts, and extra profile saves are available for purchase, but they're not required to use the app.
At a Muse Event
What happens at a Muse event?
Muse partners with live music events. Scan the Muse QR code at the venue to check in, post a selfie to the event's photo wall, and see everyone else who's there. It's a fun way to capture the moment and discover people who share your taste in music.
Do I need the full app to join an event?
No. You can scan an event's QR code and post to the photo wall instantly through the Muse App Clip — no download or full account required to start. If you download the full app later on the same device, your event activity carries over.
Who can see the photos I post at an event?
Photos you post to an event's wall are visible to other people at that event viewing the wall. Every photo is automatically screened before it appears, and you can delete anything you posted at any time.
Do I have to be at the venue to post?
Yes. Muse confirms you're at the event venue (using your device location just for that check) before you can post to the wall. Your exact location isn't stored — only that you checked in.
Spotify & Music
Do I need Spotify to use Muse?
No. Muse uses Spotify for music playback and features like Live Mode, but connecting Spotify is optional — you can use Muse without it, with some music features limited. You can connect or disconnect Spotify anytime in Settings.
Do I need Spotify Premium?
No. Muse works with both free and Premium Spotify accounts. Some playback features may be slightly different based on your Spotify plan, but all Muse features are available to everyone.
What Spotify data does Muse collect?
Muse uses Spotify strictly for music playback — we don't collect or store your Spotify listening history, saved playlists, followers, or any other Spotify account data. Your top artists and genres on Muse are added by you, not pulled from Spotify.
What is a music personality profile?
Your music personality is made up of the top genres and artists you add to your profile, plus the songs you play on Muse. It shows on your profile so others can see your taste at a glance and understand your vibe.
Live Mode
What is Live Mode?
Live Mode is a real-time discovery feature. Play any song on Spotify, open Muse, and you'll see other people listening to the same track right now. It's a way to discover people through a shared song in the moment.
How do I use Live Mode?
Play a song on Muse (which opens Spotify automatically) or play a song on Spotify and sync it in Muse. Live Mode will show you other people listening to the same track right now. Browse their profiles and connect.
Can I use Live Mode without playing a song?
No. You need to have a song actively playing on Spotify for Live Mode to work. Muse detects what you're listening to in real time and matches you with others playing the same track.
Will others know what I'm listening to?
Only if you're both in Live Mode. Other people using Live Mode at the same time can see that you're playing the same song. If you're not in Live Mode, your currently playing track is not visible to others.
Discovery & Connecting
How does Muse show me people?
Muse shows you profiles based on your preferences — things like age, location, and gender. You'll also see music info on each profile (their top artists, genres, and songs) so you can find people whose taste aligns with yours.
How do I message someone?
You can message someone once you've both expressed interest in each other. Tap on your matches to start a conversation. Messaging is only available between mutual connections.
What are boosts?
Boosts are an optional paid feature that increases your profile visibility for 30 minutes. Boosted profiles appear higher in other people's feeds, which typically leads to more connections.
What are College Picks?
College Picks are quick music polls. Vote on song matchups — for example, "Get Pumped Up: 6LACK - PRBLMS or Playboi Carti - MAGNOLIA?" — and see what people on Muse are listening to. They're a fun, low-pressure way to discover music and taste.
Privacy & Safety
Does Muse sell my data?
No. Muse never sells your personal data to third parties, advertisers, or data brokers. We don't track you across apps. Your data is used only to power your Muse experience. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.
Is my location shared with other users?
Your exact location is never shared. If you enable location, other users may see an approximate distance (e.g., "5 miles away"), but never your coordinates or address. Location is optional — you can disable it in iOS Settings at any time.
How does Muse prevent fake profiles?
Muse uses several layers: getting in requires an invite code, a live-event check-in, or a verified school (.edu) email; Apple device-integrity checks help block bots and duplicate accounts; profiles and event photos are reviewed; and the community can report suspicious accounts. Together this keeps the platform genuine and bot-free.
How do I report or block someone?
Tap the three-dot menu on any profile and select "Report" or "Block." Reports are anonymous — the other person won't know you reported them. Blocked users can't see your profile or contact you.
What happens when I report someone?
Muse reviews all reports. If a policy violation is found, the profile is removed and the user may be permanently banned. You'll never be identified as the reporter.
Account Management
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account Actions → Delete Account. Deletion is permanent and irreversible — all your data including photos, messages, and profile information will be permanently removed from Muse servers.
Can I pause my account instead of deleting it?
Yes. Pausing hides your profile from other users but keeps your account, matches, and data intact. You can unpause at any time from Settings. Deleting is permanent; pausing is temporary.
Can I change my name or age after signing up?
No. Your name and birthdate are locked after account creation for safety and identity verification purposes. Make sure they're correct during onboarding.
How do I disconnect Spotify?
Go to Settings in the Muse app to disconnect your Spotify account. You can also revoke access from spotify.com/account/apps. Disconnecting will disable music features but won't delete your Muse account.
